It is hard to see where exactly the Olympic sailing regattas are supposed to be organised. These pictures were taken less than a week ago on the medal race course in Rio de Janeiro.
In London 2012 some sailors reportedly tried to map surface currents with food colouring—for Rio we are sending Kolja Völkers with our entire current measurement technology to get a more detailed analysis. Unfortunately, the pure amount of garbage floating around makes this increasingly hard.
The question remains how exactly the organizers of the 2016 Games will solve this problem. It isn’t just the garbage that is already in the water: With every rainfall tons and tons of new sewage are washed into the sea and without treatment plants the situation will not get any better.
